Podcasts That Are Good Listening For Creatives

My hunt for resources to help me toward is a daily exercise. Lately, I’ve been seeking out podcasts that can help motivate me and give me insights to careers and perspectives from people who are already in it to win it. Specifically, I’ve been looking for voices from people who are like me Black women, creatives working full time in their art form, and creatives who may not be doing it full time. I also wanted to find resources that focused a bit on the business side of things because that always feels very murky. Creative careers aren’t traditionally ones that have a neat road map to follow so it’s nice to see what others have done to achieve their goals. These podcasts have been really insightful for me and I thought I’d share because if it was helpful for me it might be helpful to you! All show links below link to Spotify, but most of these shows can be found on any of your favorite podcast platforms. Let’s go!

The Daily Pep

Self described as rebel-rousing, encouragement, and inspiration for creative and multi-passionate women this podcast is hosted by Meg Kissack a life coach whose motto is “everything changes when you believe you matter”. This is a delightful podcast that runs usually no more than two or three minutes. It is the perfect little dose of pep talk for any creative or artist but especially for women. Think of it as your daily vitamin of encouragement.

Because the length of this podcast is only a few minutes, Meg wastes no time in getting right to the point; sharing quotes, anecdotes, books, or music to offer encouragement as you go about your day.

For me, I can't get enough of the episodes and was happy to dive into them and binged several whenever I was looking to update this post. They serve as wonderful little reminders that can help you get out of a rut, embrace your day, start something new, or try something different. Megan's enthusiastic without being overbearing and you get the feeling that she speaks from the heart. This Might Not Make Sense

This is a Patreon exclusive podcast from brother and sister duo, Evelyn and Steve. Evelyn is also known as Evelyn of the Internets and has a wonderful YouTube page of the same name that you should most definitely subscribe to. The Patreon page that she shares with her brother Steve is an equally fun ride.

This Might Not Make Sense is an audio visual delight and truly is like spending time with your favorite cousins. The show is a hodgepodge of humorous musings and observations on life as well as insight into their creative process both as they work on shared and individual projects. Evelyn is a digital storyteller and filmmaker creating short form skits, lifestyle vlogs, and scripted web series. Steve is a multi-disciplinary artist and the graphics and audio whiz behind the artful production of this video podcast. They are all-around creative spirits who have an infectious albeit laid back energy. Art Juice: A podcast for artists, creatives, and art lovers

Hosts Louise Fletcher and Alice Sheridan are working artists that discuss the ups and downs of creating and supporting yourself full time with your heart. The podcast feels like a conversation between friends that you get to listen in on. Since both have been working artists and creatives for years they have a wealth of experience and advice to learn from. I really appreciate how honest and vulnerable they are about their process and the amount of encouragement they give to other creators. Their vibe is positive without feeling cloying. They have a sizable archive  of past episodes to dive into that covers all sorts of aspects of building a business and/or life where art and creativity are placed first. I found much of their approach to art resonated with me.

The Creative Edition Podcast

Formerly known as The Content Creatives Podcast, this show was rebranded in 2022 when co-host Maddy Keineker left to pursue other goals. Emma Cortes Ellendent has changed the format of the show from a conversation between two friends working in content to creation to sharing her personal experiences in content creation as well as interviews with other content creators.

I’m still very weak when it comes to utilizing social media and despite being in these spaces for the past 10 to 15 years, I still feel very much a neophyte. This show is a go to for all the best insights on how to use various social platforms. Emma has the experience and numbers to back up her advice and presents her insights in a supportive and incredibly encouraging way. Never condescending, she knows her shit and wants to make sure you learn it too. She speaks openly about choices she’s made and the opportunities she gained or missed because of them. The shows is chock full of tools, workflows, and personal experiences that make it clear the labor involved to grow an audience and the rewards it brings. I appreciate her candor and exuberance and go to the podcast when I need a refresher when I start feeling overwhelmed.
